Every year on 17 May Norwegians fill the streets with cheers and flags in celebration of Norway's constitution adopted in 1814. In Skopje the celebration this year was extra special with a reception in the old Turkish guesthouse Kursumli An.
14/05/2007 :: In the 14th century, Skopje was described as being an important trading center with its Old Bazaar, Covered Marketplace, the Kursumli An, Daut Pasha Baths and the Mustapha Pasha Mosque.
Thus, Kursumli An lies in the middle of the old town in Skopje. Over 300 guests attended the reception when both the Norwegian and Macedonian National Anthems was performed by Macedonian artists, and many expressed amazement at the beauty of the Kursumli An.
As the Turkish writer Dilger Zede wrote in the 17th Century: "I travelled for a long time and I saw a lot of beautiful cities, but not one has impressed and delighted me so much as the heavens city of Skopje across which passes the river Vardar."
